How to Design a Low-Maintenance Family Backyard

Backyards can be a lot of work. Just ask your neighbors who have complex landscaping with high-maintenance gardenias, wisteria, and English roses. Without rigorous upkeep, these plants can quickly succumb to disease or lose their vibrancy.

Introducing young children and pets into the equation creates even more landscaping challenges. But rest assured, you can still maintain a beautiful backyard.

In this post, you’ll learn how to bring a stunning (yet low-maintenance) backyard to life through smart zoning, pest control, hardscaping, native plants, and even a few high-tech tricks.

Backyard Zones

Mapping out your backyard into designated zones prevents your entire backyard from becoming a maintenance chore.

Establish an “active zone” using soft hardscaping materials like rounded pea gravel and engineered wood fibers. These surfaces provide a cushioned, impact-absorbing area for play and relaxation while maintaining the natural feel of your yard. As part of our professional hardscaping services, we design and install these features to blend seamlessly with your landscape, improving both safety and functionality. An added benefit is that materials like gravel can help deter pests such as ticks, supporting a cleaner, more comfortable outdoor environment.

Next, designate a backyard social zone on a paved area (or patio) near the back door. Place outdoor lounge furniture and keep an outdoor storage bin for cleaning supplies.

For extra security, create a buffer zone out of low-maintenance privacy plants like Green Giant and Emerald Arborvitae evergreens. They also act as windbreakers, protecting your plants from wind damage.

Pest Control

Some low-maintenance plants are even pest-resistant, like lavender, which leaves a relaxing scent in your backyard. Similarly, Russian Sage is a hardy perennial that acts as a natural pest control; plus, it’s pet-safe!

Checking an official website for pest control resources can reveal even more low-maintenance tips, including:

  • Simple routine pruning to prevent overgrowth
  • Removing leaf piles after raking
  • Critter-proof fencing
  • Secure wood storage
  • Using gravel when possible

UV pest control lamps add a splash of color at night while keeping mosquitoes away during evening gatherings. Terracotta citronella candles are also perfect for your social zones.

Hardscaping Ideas

Hardscaping helps minimize pests while reducing your maintenance load.

To control weed growth, install large patio pavers that offer less room for weeds to flourish. Additionally, you can fill your backyard pathways with decomposed granite, which is still firm enough for walking, pushing strollers, and pets.

Astroturf has come a long way. If you’re craving that classic lush green lawn, consider synthetic options that look (and feel) like the real thing.

Planting and Watering Tips

Research native plants in your area. They require less maintenance since they’re already adapted to your soil and climate.

Zone your native plants by water needs to prevent overwatering. There are even smart drip irrigation systems that sync with your local weather forecast to conserve water!

Mulch also conserves water while adding more texture to your garden. It even breaks down into nutrient-rich compost, keeping those garden beds vibrant and colorful.

Enjoy Your Backyard (Without the Stress)

Your new low-maintenance backyard is just a few stepping stones away!

First, zone your backyard by activity level, leaving the perimeter for privacy trees. Practice natural and safe pest control, like planting lavender. Hardscape where you can, and group your native plants by water usage.
