Shirts are a versatile and stylish wardrobe staple, but they can sometimes look a bit boring. If you’re looking for a way to add some personality to your shirt collection, why not try giving them a vintage makeover?

With a few simple steps, you can give your shirts a faded, worn-in look that will make them stand out from the rest. Plus, this technique is easy to do at home with minimal supplies needed. So grab an old shirt and let’s get started!

How to Make a Shirt Look Faded

There are a few different ways you can make a shirt look faded. You can use fabric markers or paint to create a distressed look, or you can bleach the shirt to give it a truly vintage feel.

  1. Start by prepping your work area. Cover your work surface with a plastic tablecloth or garbage bag to protect it from bleach damage. Then lay out your shirt on the surface and smooth it out.
  2. Next, you’ll need to decide what design you want to create on your shirt. For this project, we’re going to go for a distressed look. To do this, use a fabric marker or paintbrush to draw lines, squiggles, or other designs on the shirt.
  3. Once you’ve got your design ready, it’s time to start bleaching the shirt. Pour some bleach into a cup or bowl and Dip a brush or sponge into the bleach. then start brushing it onto your shirt. Work in small sections and be sure to evenly distribute the bleach.
  4. After a few minutes, you should start to see the color of your shirt fading. Once you’re happy with the level of fading, rinse the bleach off with cool water.
  5. Finally, wash your shirt in the washing machine on the delicate cycle to remove any leftover bleach. Hang it up to dry and enjoy your new vintage shirt!

You can also try other methods to make your shirt look faded like tie-dyeing or using fabric dye. But if you want a truly vintage look, bleaching is the way to go.

How to Make a Shirt Look Worn In

  1. To start, choose an old shirt that’s comfortable and well-fitting. A thrifted shirt or one that’s been sitting in the back of your closet for awhile is perfect for this project.
  2. Next, put on the shirt and mark where you want it to be distressed. Use a fabric marker or piece of chalk to make dots, lines, or other designs on the shirt.
  3. Once you’ve got your design ready, it’s time to start distressing the shirt. Use a sharp knife or scissors to carefully cut or tear the fabric along the lines you marked. Be sure not to cut yourself!
  4. As you continue distressing the shirt, you can also add other elements like fraying or holes. To fray the fabric, simply pull at it until it starts to unravel. To make holes, use a sharp object like a pen or safety pin to poke through the fabric.
  5. When you’re happy with the amount of distressing, wash the shirt in the washing machine on the delicate cycle. Hang it up to dry and enjoy your new worn-in shirt!
