How to Create a Bathroom That Feels Bigger Than It Is

Most bathrooms aren’t blessed with endless square metres of space. In fact, many feel cramped, cluttered, and hard to relax in. The good news is that with the right design choices, you can make even the smallest bathroom feel more open and inviting. From clever storage to stylish details like basin set taps, there are plenty of ways to give the illusion of more space without knocking down walls.

Choose Light Colours and Reflective Surfaces

Colour has a huge impact on how large or small a room feels. Dark tones absorb light, making walls close in, while lighter shades bounce light around, creating a sense of openness. Soft whites, pale greys, or light neutrals are timeless choices that make bathrooms feel airy. Reflective surfaces like gloss tiles, mirrored cabinets, or glass shower screens amplify this effect.

Maximise Natural and Artificial Light

Good lighting is essential in a small bathroom. Natural light instantly expands a room, so keep windows free of heavy curtains and consider frosted glass for privacy without sacrificing brightness. Where natural light is limited, layer artificial lighting with ceiling fixtures, vanity lights, and LED strips. Warm, even lighting not only makes the bathroom more functional but also makes it appear larger.

Use Mirrors Strategically

Mirrors are one of the oldest tricks in the book for creating the illusion of space. A large mirror above the vanity doubles the visual depth of the room, while mirrored cabinets add both function and style. Round or full-wall mirrors can become design features while helping reflect light and open up the space.

Think Vertical With Storage

Clutter is the quickest way to make a small bathroom feel even smaller. Vertical storage solutions free up floor space while keeping essentials within easy reach. Floating shelves, tall cabinets, or wall-mounted organisers keep counters clear. Recessed shelving in showers or behind mirrors adds discreet storage without crowding the room.

Choose Space-Saving Fixtures

Fixtures and fittings can make or break how roomy a bathroom feels. Opt for wall-mounted vanities to expose more floor area, or slimline basins that don’t take up unnecessary width.

A walk-in shower with clear glass panels feels much less confining than a shower curtain or frosted enclosure. Compact toilets and multi-functional fixtures are also great options in small layouts.

Keep It Cohesive

Visual clutter can make a bathroom feel busier than it really is. Sticking to a cohesive palette for tiles, fixtures, and accessories creates a streamlined, seamless look. Matching hardware and finishes throughout — taps, handles, and shower fittings — makes the space feel designed rather than pieced together.

Add Simple Luxuries

Even in a small space, small luxuries make a big difference. Heated towel rails, plush bathmats, or well-styled accessories create a sense of calm. These details don’t physically change the size of the bathroom, but they make it feel more inviting and less cramped.

A Bigger Bathroom Without the Renovation

Making a bathroom feel larger isn’t about square footage — it’s about design choices. With the right colours, mirrors, lighting, and fixtures, you can open up the space and make it feel fresh, modern, and functional. Add a few thoughtful details, and you’ll find yourself enjoying a bathroom that feels far bigger than it really is.
