Common Garage Door Repairs

How do you know whether to repair your garage door or completely replace it? Because it costs more to replace your garage door than repair it, it’s important to investigate the situation first, then decide what to do next. The solution could be as simple as replacing the chain or belt or replacing your garage door opener.

Common Garage Door Issues

If your garage door suddenly stops working, it could be for a variety of reasons. Your garage door motor, tracks, or springs might need to be replaced. If your garage door has minor dents, scrapes, or holes, look into repairing them right away. If your garage door has minor damages and they are ignored, they could worsen and lead to bigger issues that could cost you more money.

Grinding or other strange noise – If your garage door is a strange noise every time it opens or closes, the chain or belt may need to be replaced. New chains range from $50 to $200. New belts range from $80 to $200.

Cosmetic damages – If your garage door has minor damages like chipped paint, a dent, or a small hole, you could sand the damaged areas and paint over them.

Opening and closing– If your garage door isn’t opening and closing properly, you may need a new motor, tracks, springs, belts, or cables.

When replacing the garage door motor, you may need to replace the garage door opener too. A new garage door opener typically costs anywhere between $150 to $350, with an additional $200 to $600 for the motor.

The reason your garage door isn’t opening and closing properly could be that the tracks are bent or old. New tracks range from $125 to $300. The cost for new springs is around $250. This price does not include labor costs. New belts range from $80 to $200. New cables range from $100 to $400.

Off-Centered – If your garage door is off-balanced, unleveled, or crooked, you could make a simple adjustment to fix it.

Garage Door Remote – Sometimes, the issue isn’t the garage door itself. The issue may be the garage door remote control. The average lifespan for a garage door remote is 10 to 15 years.

If you cannot pinpoint the problem to one specific issue, the best solution is to replace your entire garage door. You can purchase a new garage door kit and use the instruction manual to install it yourself or leave it to the professionals.

Leaving it to the Professionals

If you need your garage door repaired or replaced, you can always hire a professional that specializes in garage repairs.
